Haiti Overload…

There have been many, many fundraisers since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12th.  Everything from kids putting collection jars in their classrooms to George Clooney’s star-studded telethon.  Not to mention the non-stop campaigning for donations by the multitude of charitable organizations participating in the gargantuan relief effort.

And the events keep on coming, including George Lopez’s event in Los Angeles last night and the BET concert, “SOS Saving Ourselves” airing live from Miami tonight.  Both are star studded and sure to generate even more money for Haiti.

It’s great to see everyone continuing to show their support for such a worthy cause, but how much more can we really expect to raise?  Between the concerts, telethons, online giving, texting, pancake breakfasts, and car washes, hundreds of millions of dollars have already been given, and yet people move forward with confidence that there are millions more out there to be tapped.

And there are.  Because everyone is making it personal.  Clooney’s telethon got us off and running by bringing everyone into the tent.  There was something for every age and demographic in that show. Now as others look for ways to make a difference they’re going to their own communities for support.  They’re making it personal.

George Lopez is tremendously popular with Latinos, with his standup comedy fans, and with families who enjoyed his sitcom.  His show reflects that with guests like Andy Garcia, Los Lobos, Ray Romano, and Kobe Bryant. His impressive guest list extends outside the Hispanic demographic but he knows his community and he’ll speak to them.  And he’ll raise money.

The BET concert, hosted by Queen Latifah, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Pharrell Williams, will be targeting the urban African American audience with performers such as Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, and Ne-Yo.  The powerful triumvirate of hosts will speak to women, to hip-hop kids, to trendsetters; they’ll touch their audience.  And they’ll raise money.

Meanwhile, the Fall River, Massachussets, Portuguese-American community sold out 1,000 seats in two weeks for the concert fundraiser they’re holding this weekend.   The Tacoma, Washington, French Club is asking its communaute to gather and give.  Anything that creates community can be targeted when it’s time to raise money. Roger Federer gathered tennis fans with “Hit for Haiti” in Australia, and Lang Lang will bring together classical music lovers for a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall.

You can do it, too.  Your cause can generate the kind of passion and personal involvement we’re seeing right now for Haiti.  Show your supporters how their money makes a difference.  Demonstrate to them how their volunteer hours are changing lives.  Never hesitate to tell them why their involvement is critical – and appreciated.  Not in some form letter or pre-printed note.  Make it personal, people.  That should be every non-profit’s mantra.

Haiti Assistance Relief Telethon (HART) Wrap Up

Earlier this week, WhatGives!? parent company Causemedia Group helped our pal Jim Turner of One by One Media broadcast for 24 hours straight from the studios of wsRadio in San Diego.  The Haitian Assistance Relief Telethon began Sunday at 6pm PST, and continued until 6pm Monday evening – during which Jim talked and informed and chatted with guests and asked for money.  And asked again.  Apparently, he’s very persuasive.  When all was said and done, nearly $5,000 was raised, mostly through the efforts of social media folks tapping into their networks.   Jim said he “never expected to have so many do so much to help at the drop of a hat.  A few emails, phone calls, and direct messages to a few friends was all it took to get the momentum going.”

For our telethon/radiothon/netathon we selected three vital, experienced organizations to be our beneficiaries:

Concern Worldwide first went into Haiti in 1994 with a focus on improving the health of those in need, preventing violence in the slums, and fighting HIV/AIDS.  In response to the earthquake they are currently distributing water, establishing latrines, and providing tents and plastic sheeting for shelter for tens of thousands of people.

Architecture for Humanity
was founded in 1999 and is responding to the earthquake by raising funds to support efforts in the rebuilding of affected areas. They mainly work in the reconstruction phase of post disaster situations.  Architecture for Humanity will supply local groups with pro bono construction and design professionals, setting up community housing resource centers and support in the design and building of earthquake resistant structures.

Save the Children began helping children in the 1930s who were struggling to survive the Great Depression.  They have worked in Haiti since 1978 and currently has about 200 staff on the ground. serving the needs of some of Haiti’s poorest children and families – providing food, shelter, education, and health programs, as well as counseling and play opportunities. In response to the current crisis, the agency is racing to provide immediate lifesaving assistance, such as food, water, shelter and Child Friendly Spaces.

This 24-hour effort was a simple idea that only required the will to get it done.  All services were donated and we relied on our friends to get out the word and support the effort.  We were not disappointed.  It’s a great example of how the internet can empower individuals and small groups, allowing them to do remarkable things.  It’s always been called a “grassroots” campaign referring to local neighborhoods and the steady, organic growth of a movement. What we saw in response to the Haiti crisis was more explosion than growth.  It was social-surge of participation that continues to expand.

One of the best parts was hearing from all the people in the social media world.  Callers and guests throughout the 24 hours all had ideas and insights into what we could do now and what we could continue to do.  After all, Haiti will be in crisis for years.  How do we keep people interested and engaged over a length of time – a problem for every charity.

As a way of staying true to our motto here at WhatGives!? we helped Jim do something good, and then we told people about it. And now we’re going to do it again.  We like this whole whatever-a-thon idea and plan to launch another March 23rd in connection with Twestival.

Poor Jim.  He has no idea what he’s gotten himself into.

Usually, He’s Captain America…

…but today, Jim Turner (@genuine on Twitter) is more like Iron Man.  As of right now, he’s about 15 hours in to a 24 hour internet-radio telethon to raise money for Haiti relief efforts.  Why is he doing it?  Because he can.  Jim wants to help those suffering in Haiti, and as he says on his blog, this is the best way for him to contribute.  So Jim has launched the Haiti Assistance Relief Telethon (using hashtag #HART on Twitter), and many are joining him in the effort.

Jim’s been joined guests from Spain to Hawaii; by social media experts, bloggers, non-profit organizers, and missionaries on the ground in Haiti.  Listen in if you get a chance at wsRadio.  You’ll be inspired by Jim and his guests and their outpouring of compassion.

You can also call in and join on air at 1-888-327-0061. If you do you’ll be in great company – @pistachio, @christinelu, @neenz and many other of Twitter’s most popular folks are showing their support and joining the #HART effort.

What’s going on with this telethon? it’s pretty simple:

From 6:00pm PST January 17th to 6:00pm January 19th, a 24-hour, social media driven campaign to raise funds for Haiti will begin on wsRadio.com.  Co-sponsored by One by One Media, Causemedia Group, and wsRadio, the Haitian Assistance Relief Telethon will be feature host Jim Turner (One by One) and a non-stop guest list featuring influencers from across the Social Media spectrum.  This grass roots campaign aims to raise awareness of the current and future needs of the people of Haiti as well as encourage listeners/viewers to donate to one of three specified Haiti Relief organizations:

Architecture for Humanity

Concern Worldwide

Save the Children

Show listeners are encouraged to support these organizations by donating through PayPal, which will be waiving transaction fees for these three charities.

People can call in to chat with Jim or ask questions of guests by calling 1-888-327-0061 People on Twitter can follow Jim at @Genuine and spread the word by including #HART in their own tweets.

Updates will also be appearing regularly throughout the 24-hour program on the website: www.whatgives.com/haiti

Most importantly though, as Jim will tell you – you can help by giving.  We’ve posted donation widgets for the three charities supported by the telethon.  Take the opportunity to do something good.  Then tell people about it.  Then do it again.

So Much Done, So Much to Do…

Thank you.

There’s nothing else to say.  You have all been magnificent in your response to the crisis in Haiti.  The power of individuals coming together to form a specific community for a purpose has never been more clearly demonstrated.  Over a million dollars raised via texting for Yele Haiti.  Over EIGHT million dollars texted to the Red Cross.  With millions more coming into the dozens of active non-profits in Haiti via websites and good old-fashioned passing the hat gatherings.  Thank you.  Well done.

Brian Williams reports from Port au Prince, Haiti

And the money just keeps coming – corporations, governments, celebrities, and good citizens just like you around the world – all continue to give.

Corporate America has really stepped up, donating money and materials to the cause.  There was a million dollar smackdown going on among banks, as JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America all pledged that amount to Haitian relief and recovery.  Investment bank Jeffries Group also pledged $1 million and threw in Friday’s global commissions and some volunteered salaries to boot.  Nicely played, sirs.

Meanwhile, #2 home improvement chain Lowes donated $1 million to the Red Cross, leaving #1 Home Depot looking a little, um, conservative, with their $100,000 pledge.  Hopefully, some building materials might get loaded onto a plane soon, too.

The burning question for everyone, of course, is what about the celebrities!?  Well, not to be outdone by a silly little international banking consortium, supermodel Gisele Bundchen donated a whopping $1.5 million to the Red Cross! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Oprah, Sandra Bullock, and Ted Turner each pledged a million, while Madonna, Tyler Perry, and Lance Armstrong have pitched in $250,000 apiece for various organizations.  Celebs like Alyssa Milano, Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher, Paris Hilton, and Christina Applegate are banging the drum for donations using Twitter, Facebook, and public appeals.  Probably the most well-known is that Wyclef Jean Yele Haiti campaign mentioned above.  Ben Stiller’s StillerStrong was already raising money for a school in Haiti when the earthquake hit. For now, any donations received will go to emergency relief.

But what about the king of Hollywood, George Clooney? He led the way when the towers fell in 2001 by organizing a telethon to raise money for the victims and their families.  He’ll be it again, this time on all the MTV networks (VH1, Comedy Central, and CMT) as well as on ABC,NBC, HBO, and CNN.  The telethon is currently scheduled for January 22nd.

Finally, we want to remind you that America isn’t in this fight alone.  Money is pouring in from all across the globe.  Governments were quick to release funds for the effort.  The United Kingdom and Brazil both pledged $10 million in relief funds. Canada is loading two warships, helicopters and planes with supplies, as well preparing to send a large relief and rescue force.  And the United Nations has released $10 million in emergency funds.

Also:
Israel – two planes with a field hospital and around 220 emergency personnel.
Cuba – 30 doctors to join staff already operating field hospitals in Haiti.
Columbia, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela also promised help.

The people of the world are generous, too.  More than £2 million (approx $3.25 million) has been donated online so far to the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee, which supports numerous organizations including the British Red Cross, Save the Children, and Oxfam. The Canadian Red Cross has also received millions of dollars worth of donations.  Relief organizations in every country, on every continent are benefiting from the generosity of their citizens.

So, three cheers for us!!!  Hip Hip Hooray!!!  But wait, there’s more.

This Sunday, we’re going to beat Mr. Clooney to the punch by having a telethon of our own.  One by One Media, WS Radio, and Causemedia Group (Whatgives!? parent company) are joining forces for 24 hours beginning at 6:00pm PST on January 17th to help raise awareness and mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money for disaster aid.  Jim Turner, leader of One By One Media, will host the Haiti Assistance Relief Telethon (HART).  Please stay tuned, as the kids used to say.  We’ll have updates soon about guests and ways you can give!

By the way, thanks again…
