Take the First Step…

Well, even though [re]think: Hawaii has ended (pause for deep sigh), I can’t stop thinking about the fact that so many of the online success stories I heard throughout the week started with, “I didn’t really know what I was doing, but…”  Jill Buck just wanted to teach her children about environmentalism and ended up with a global initiativeTed Rheingold wanted his wife to be able to enjoy photos of dogs until they could get one of their own.  Beth Blecherman needed to find a way to connect with other Moms when she chose to stay at home with her kids.  Over and over these folks jumped right in, never thinking that it might be too hard, or they didn’t understand the technology, or that their idea didn’t have value.  They had an idea and they simply began.

I think that’s an attribute that is found in most successful people – a confidence that they are somehow “worthy” of creating something.  Kevin Pollak is a comedian who, after a few small (usually humorous) film roles, startled people with his dramatic performance in “A Few Good Men”.  Now he’s taken on yet another unexpected role – online talk show host.  Why?  Because it was something he’d wanted to do for a while, so he just jumped in and assumed he’d figure it out as he went along.

Good advice for anyone with a dream…

Guy Kawasaki

You can’t spend a week at a conference like [re]think: Hawaii without hearing the name Guy Kawasaki. As a co-founder of RSS aggregator site  Alltop and partner in venture capital investment group Garage Technologies Ventures he’s a force in his home state and across the worldwide web.

We had a chance to chat with him a few weeks ago in Vegas during BlogWorld.  He had some advice for non-profits and a shout out to the cause that touches him most – the human rights organization International Justice Mission.
