Name Your Cause – It’s a Wrap!

NYC_Avatar

You voted. You tweeted. You facebooked it.  You voted some more.  You Named Your Cause!  It was an exciting race to the finish line, but you can rest easy now knowing all your hard-earned clicks have truly paid off.  First place and a $2,500 eBay Gift Card went to Friends of Colombian Orphans, a small grassroots non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of Colombian Orphans, who attributed their amazing win to “The power of social media, combined with nagging and a track record of integrity and passion for a cause.”  The Jonah Project won second place with $2,000 to shell out on eBay, which they’ll put to use in their efforts to help the homeless community on the streets on Skid Row in Los Angeles.  And last but definitely not least, To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), a non-profit all about finding hope and help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide, closed the gap from top ten to 3rd place and won themselves a $1,000 eBay Gift Card.

So now what?

I’m a sucker for a follow up.  Especially because these charities can offer their wisdom to other charities who may be afraid or hesitant to enter unfamiliar territories like Name Your Cause that are – let’s be honest – heavily reliant on using social media to spread the word. So, WhatGives!?  What are the winners going to do with all that eBay dough? What were their strategies?  Tell us your secrets, oh wise charities!

Chloe Grabanski works as Benefit Coordinator for TWLOHA – running their Street Team, handling mail donations, training new interns, and events.  Lucky for us, she was so enthusiastic about their win that she happily answered all my questions, and then some!  For starters, Chloe says that they plan on using the eBay money to fund office supplies which, as mundane as it may sound, is totally necessary for an organization boasting 50K followers on Twitter, 600K on Facebook Causes, and over 350K MySpace friends.  So how did they win?  Although they entered late in the game, Chloe says they couldn’t have done it without the use of their social networks, including their Street Team, Twitter Page, and Facebook Cause Page, which really helped to rally everyone.  When I asked how TWLOHA felt about their huge networks doing so much good, she told me “We feel so fortunate to have the following we do. We want people to feel connected, and know that they are important, and that their stories matter. It’s a blessing to know people believe in what we’re doing.” Humble and appreciative? Wow, no wonder these guys have so many passionate followers! :-)

A huge thank you to WorldofGood.com by eBay making this contest possible.  And even more importantly, thanks to all of you for getting so into it!  You did something good.  We’re telling people about it.  Now, get out there and do it again!!

What do you care about?  More importantly, what are you ready to stand up for?  Most importantly, what are you ready to shop for?    It’s time to throw down and put in some quality clicking for the cause you care about.   It’s time to Name Your Cause!

Here at WhatGives!? we’ve been talking about ways to give this holiday season and decided a little friendly competition was in order.  Our pals at eBay and WorldofGood.com agreed.  So, from now until Thursday, December 10th, when you cast your vote for your favorite nonprofit you get them one step closer to winning a $2,500 gift card from eBay!  It’s free and there’s no complicated registration form.  Just check out our list of nonprofits from across the country and give one a click to show you care.  Yes, you can vote more than once, but not more than once every four hours.  So, you can get a little sleep…

What’s that?  Your fave isn’t on the list?  Well, nominate them right now!  Then spread the word to friends, family, and fellow supporters through Twitter and Facebook, or just call ‘em up, for Pete’s sake.  You’ve got one week to rack up votes for the nonprofit you love. The 501c3 with the most votes will receive a $2,500 eBay gift card; second place gets $1,500; and third place, $1,000.

So, come on, people, show a little holiday hustle.

All together now.

Heifer International & Haley the Cow

I just read Noland Hoshino’s tale of Carrying a Cow for a Cause on the Heifer Portland website.  He and Bryan Dainty were at BlogWorld as part of our Name Your Cause campaign.  Haley the Cow was a big hit with everyone who visited the eBay/PayPal #Superbooth.  (Full disclosure, I LOVE Heifer International.  Every Christmas I give my friends and family all sorts of furry and feathered creatures.  My mama is really hoping for a goat this year.  Seriously.)

Please take a minute to read Noland’s story and to learn more about Heifer.  And check out WhatGives!? guy Christopher Smith’s interview with Haley (and Bryan) below!

LA’s BEST

I’m in Honolulu this week attending the [re]think: Hawaii conference (partially sponsored by WhatGives!?), and learning all about startonomics, sustainability, and social media.  The three “esses”!

During one of the great conversations among locals and mainlanders I heard about Furlough Friday which refers to the 17 Fridays that school will be cancelled this academic year.  Huge state buLAsBestLogodget shortfalls have forced the government to send a lot of workers home on Fridays.  But it leaves parents with the huge problem of what to do with the kids on that day off.  We want to talk more about that later in the week, but it reminded me of the tremendous work being done by LA’s BEST for kids in the Los Angeles school system.

LA’s BEST is an incredibly successful after school program.  Their landmark case study demonstrated that at-risk students in LA’s BEST program are 30% less likely to commit juvenile crime than their peers.  There are also tax dollar benefits and overall improved behavior in school.  It’s a program that is rightfully being copied in other communities.

When we were at BlogWorld in October, we had the opportunity to talk with Zainab Ali, Communications Manager for LA’s BEST (@lasbest).  They joined us as winners of the Name Your Cause program, and it was a great day for everyone!

Charities Thrive In The Las Vegas Desert

Bringing together ten diverse charities at the BlogWorld & New Media Expo was not only one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve been a part of, but also just downright awesome!  I watched as their passionate staff and volunteers raised money, spread their message, and most importantly, began to form some genuine friendships.

Thanks to our generous friends at eBay and PayPal, we were able to bring these groups to BlogWorld after they won a week-long challenge among a wide variety of charities.  Once there, we held a Charity Smackdown – and boy, oh boy did we have fun!  Spirit Jump, a new grassroots charity, took 1st place, which earned them an additional $2,000 from PayPal. All of the charities truly won in the end by learning how to harness the power of social media.

Want to see what I’m talking about?  Connect with these amazing folks in your own social networks and hometowns.  Follow Surfrider in their quest for protection of our oceans and  beaches, Canine Companions for Independence as they train dogs for adults with disabilities, L.A.’s Best as they strive for quality after-school programs for L.A.’s youth, and Alex’s Lemonade in their unstoppable drive to end childhood cancer.  Keep up with 3for5 Foundation’s movement to bring clean water to the developing countries, Mother’s Fighting for Other’s & Stepwise Foundation’s fight to provide orphanages with a loving and nurturing environment, Best Friends Animal Society’s amazing animal rescue and protection, and last but certainly not least, Heifer Portland’s goal to ending hunger by providing practical and sustainable solutions to poverty.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? Not for long! The fire of determination these people bring to their causes shines brighter than any of the flashing neon of The Strip. I am truly thankful to have been a part of these charities’ stories, and look forward to watching their continued success.

I’m already counting down the days until we can re-unite and share more laughs, stories, and advice on the world of social media for social good.  BFF’s forever!?

Charities & Participants, what was your favorite part? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. :-)

Cancer Sucks

Terminal Cancer survivor Meaghan Edelstein reminds WhatGives!? guy Christopher Smith that Cancer Sucks when she joins him in our booth at BlogWorld ’09. Her project, Spirit Jump, enables people to send words of encouragement and gifts to people battling cancer. It’s a one-on-one connection that has brightened the days of thousands.

One cup at a time…

Melissa Jones from Alex’s Lemonade Stand stopped by the WhatGives!? booth at BlogWorld ’09 to tell us how you can open your own lemonade stand for childhood cancer research. They’ve raised over 30 million dollars so far – one cup at a time.
