WhatGives!? It’s GRAMMY Time!

The GRAMMY Awards broadcast is the greatest music show on television.  And guess who gets to go?  Yours truly!!  Yup, that’s right!  This weekend, Joey and I will be heading to LA for the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards and I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am.  Don’t get your undies in a bunch, we’ll be working!

As you know from some of my earlier posts, the GRAMMYs have a long standing tradition of supporting charities with their eBay Auctions.  Every year at the GRAMMYs, they get all the performers, attendees, and celebs to sign the auction items while they’re backstage rehearsing, performing, and just hanging out.  And I’ll be there to help!

Whose autograph do you want?  What would you bid on?  Tell me and I’ll see what I can do! :-)

I’ll be tweeting and blogging from the GRAMMYs all weekend long, so definitely follow us on Twitter for updates and juicy pics.  I’ll try to take as many photos as they let me!  And be sure to save the auction page in your bookmarks so you can see all the hot stuff we’ll put up!  (www.ebay.com/GRAMMY)

GRAMMYS here I come!

The Uniform Project

There’s nothing like a two-for-one sale to get my attention, especially when it involves fashion. So imagine my delight to discover that eBay’s Green Team is matching donated dollars to the Uniform Project during the month of December!  (The only thing that would make this better is if the afore-mentioned “uniform” in question was being modeled by a firefighter, but we’ll save the self-analysis for later.)  The Uniform Project is a very simple, but very effective example of how one person can use social media to do good half a world away.about__v1260893334996

Sheena Matheiken knows uniforms.  Her school in India required them, so the idea of wearing the same thing every day is familiar.  But from that experience she learned that wearing the same thing and looking the same don’t necessarily go hand in hand.  Her friends would add a little something to their basic outfit to show a little personality.  That spark of expression inspired Sheena to launch The Uniform Project.

Every day since last May, Sheena has put on one of seven identical dresses. Every day she adds accessories (often donated by her many fans) or other articles of clothing.  Every day she puts another dollar of her own in the bank for the Akansha Foundation.  Her goal was simple: at the end of one year she would have over $360.  $360 is the amount needed to for one of the 7.5 million Indian children who never get to attend school to get the education they need.  Simple, clear, attainable goal.  But what if someone else put in a dollar or two as well?  Easy peasy – use the internet to spread the word.  Result? The project has been such a success that, not only has it raised almost $47,000 in the first six months, there are also plans to manufacture and sell the now-famous uniform.

A bonus is the sustainability aspect of this project.  Do we really need closets full of outfits and separates and coordinates and layers?  Sheena thinks not and the eBay Green Team agree.  Saluting this simple choice of less, they’re matching every dollar donated in December up to $15,000.  Director of eBay’s Green Team, Amy Skoczlas-Cole, explained that teaming up with The Uniform Project seemed like a natural extension of their belief that the greenest product out there is actually the one that already exists.  Skoczlas-Cole added that Sheena is promoting “sustainable fashion with style and creativity that can transcend the ‘green’ niche. It’s showing how being green is a trade-up, not a trade-off — an idea that the world needs more champions of.”

ebay_green_team.cq78u0pcz6884owkcs0gk8wg.17ldmg3f9ou8088wk04c40sgo.thThe Uniform Project is also symbolic that we are all basically cut from the same cloth, but with different “accessories” to individualize us.  Every child everywhere deserves an education.  We deserve a planet filled with smart, productive citizens.  Come on, people, it’s a buck.  Until the end of the year the eBay Green Team will make it two. Do it.

How WhatGives!? got started…

TappingPencil

Good ideas often have strange beginnings. Our buddy, Roman Garcia came up with the name WhatGives!? and initiated the site nearly two years ago.  (Just last month, our parent company Causemedia Group took it over.)

Later this week we’ll be launching a new feature called “How I Started” that will profile folks who are working for social good and their beginnings, and we wanted to give Roman a chance to reminisce about the formative days of WhatGives!?

Amazing what bad sushi and Nyquil can do, huh?. His story:

“Do you remember?

… that scene in Jerry McGuire? He can’t sleep , blames the bad pizza and comes up with the epiphany of his career. Yes, he ended up getting fired because of it, but not the point of this post.

I had a similar situation about 20 months ago, though my culprit was Nyquil and bad sushi. During that time I was part of the eBay Giving Works team and I was tasked with launching our first blog. I clearly remember being in a half daze fighting a cold and bad sushi and writing down “names” for what the blog would be called. I came up with some pretty bad ones, and my colleagues suggested even worse ones ;-) . The end result was “What Gives!?”.

So how do I feel now that this site has been re-launched; bigger and better? I feel pretty ecstatic, so much so that I asked my friends behind the scenes to let me contribute to the greatest thing that’s ever come out my mind (aside from my killer blog).

What Gives!? was conceived to be everything that the site is still today. It’s about the good works that YOU do. And the best part is these good works can be things that have been done a million times before, or are still being conceived in your mind. Consider this the vehicle that takes you to where your good deeds want to be.

So please get out there and do some good. Then tell us about it, then do it again. Tell us your stories, and follow up with us. And if you want to meet up for coffee, don’t hesitate to ask.”

-RG

Thanks, Roman! Keep ‘em coming!

Incubus Gets Their Charity On with eBay Auction

IncubusreducedResolution

Incubus is rocking our world. Now that WhatGives!? is a part of Cause Media Group, we get the inside scoop on charity auctions created by our sister company, Kompolt.  The Incubus Make Yourself Foundation has raised well over a million dollars for worthwhile causes, and the band continues to amaze us with their philanthropic ways.  They’ve got some extremely rare items and experiences up for bids right now on eBay, with all the proceeds going to their favorite charities.  Check out Brandon’s personal 1965 Vintage Vespa and his Al Merrick Surfboard customized with his own artwork.  Plus, they’ve got Jose’s Custom Harley Davidson. Sweet rides, Incubus!

Check out the auction and get your bidding-for-good on at www.ebay.com/incubus. Only 6 more days left to bid!

The Make Yourself Foundation supports an eclectic variety of causes and charities both locally and around the world.  The band funds the foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds generated from touring, record royalties, special events, and online auctions like this one.  Since 2004, Brandon, Mike, Jose, Chris, and Ben have dedicated themselves to spreading the good.

Incubus fan or not, this is a great opportunity to support a great cause.  Watch this intro video from band member DJ Kilmore.

WhatGives!? with #beatcancer!?

It’s easy to make fun of all the folks walking around typing with their thumbs, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on in the world. But it is a misperception. People involved in social networks are more involved, more engaged, and more connected to the wider world than you can imagine. (Well, okay, not you, you’re reading this. But more than all those other people can imagine…)

BW-LemonChatwani-sm

Robert Chatwani, eBay, and CNN anchor Don Lemon during the eBay/PayPal #beatcancer challenge

This weekend a few folks decided to try something to harness all that connectivity for social good. A discussion over dinner led to some phone calls, which led to a 24-hour drive to use social media to spread a message and raise some cash for cancer charities. BlogWorld sponsors eBay/PayPal and MillerCoors Brewing Company agreed to donate a penny every time someone tweeted or blogged or posted on Facebook the phrase #beatcancer. A call to the Guinness Book of World Records set up the challenge to create the Most Widespread Social Network Message in 24 Hours. Then www.beatcancereverywhere.com quickly went up.  Game on!

#beatcancer quickly became the top-trending topic on Twitter (try saying that three times). The hashtag flew around the internet and around the world, topping over 200,000 mentions in just 24 hours. In addition, people were donating directly to cancer-related charities including SU2C (Stand Up to Cancer), Alex’s Lemonade, Bright Pink, and Spirit Jump. Not satisfied with mere pennies, eBay/PayPal chose to pay a buck a tweet during a one-hour period.

Don Lemon chats with Melissa Jones about Alex’s Lemonade Stand, one of the beneficiaries of the #beatcancer campaign.

All the final tallies and stats are below. It was an amazing campaign that happened so quickly it was over before more traditional media could even mention it. No matter. The thumb-typers were the medium, creating a specific network for a specific need thanks to the generosity of eBay/PayPal, Miller Coors Brewing Company, Everywhere, Don Lemon, and BlogWorld. Very powerful stuff.

Cause Media Group and WhatGives!? were proud to be a part of it. But we know with great power comes great responsibility. We’re doing good things. Then we’re telling people about it. And then, trust me, we’ll be doing it again.

#beatcancer by the numbers
(with special thanks to Radian6 for donating its tracking services for this campaign)

The New Record:
209,771

What that means, cash-wise:
Over $70,000 in total donations From MillerCoors, eBay, PayPal and others

The Official #beatcancer Total:
1.4 Million+ mentions to date

Worldwide Media Impressions:
Over 100 Million

Everyone’s talking about it!

And please keep supporting the charities you care about!

You Play, Charities Win.

Be a kid. Do some good.

Be a kid. Do some good.

Playing games and doing good.

Sounds like a pretty good idea, doesn’t it?  The Charity Smackdown Arcade  at BlogWorld is designed to bring out the kid in you and raise $$ for charity at the same time.

We’ve got Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Galaga *and* Ms Pac-Man.

And every quarter you spend will go to one of 10 charities that eBay and PayPal have brought to Blogworld – the winners of last month’s Name Your Cause competition.  They’re here in Vegas too, with four of them representing in the Arcade at all times.  Stop on by if you’re here and take the time to meet them in person.  Get ready to be inspired.

This morning in the booth we’ll have folks from Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Spirit Jump, Best Friends, and 3 for 5.

Not in Vegas?  No worries – you can join the fun online and donate to one of these great causes.  Whichever one raises the most in the next 48 hours will win extra cash, courtesy of PayPal.

Yes, Galaga. You know you want to.

Yes, Galaga. You know you want to.

Did I mention, we’ve got Galaga?

So go ahead, be a kid again.  And do a little good while you’re at it.
