2010 World Economic Forum Includes Causemopolitan…

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the World Economic Forum in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.  I must admit I missed the first 39.  Perhaps my invitation was lost in the mail.  No matter.  This year I’ll be front and center, because this year Sloane Berrent is attending for all of us.

Many, many (many!) of you already know this because you were part of the decision-making process.  A panel of experts was involved in the selection of the “MySpace Citizen Journalist”, but the intense support of her friends and followers also influenced the final decision.  You’ve decided to send Sloane to Davos, and she can’t wait to get there.  In the announcement of her appointment to the WEF press corp she said that attending this high-profile summit has “been a lifelong dream”.  (Mine is to be Julie Andrews. Another good reason Sloane is going and not I.)

It should be an interesting four days (January 27-31) in view of the past 12 months, not to mention the past two weeks.  A bit of clairvoyance seems to have played into the theme of “rethink, redesign, rebuild” that will guide the world business leaders, government officials, NGOs, academic leaders, and members of the media from more than 90 countries during their discussions.

The financial crisis dominated the conversation in 2009, and it will continue to be the main focus, while the future of Haiti will also be on the agenda.  Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum explained, “We have to rethink our values – we are living together in a global society with many different cultures. We have to redesign our processes – how do we deal with the issues and challenges on the global agenda. And finally, we have to rebuild our institutions.”  Regarding Haiti specifically, Professor Schwab said, “We want to use Davos to solicit commitments of our partners, members and constituents in the form of practical help for relief of the continued pain of Haiti’s people and particularly for the reconstruction of Haiti.”

The World Economic Forum is not without controversy, but certainly the gathering of such an immensely powerful group of people will generate ideas and programs worth hearing about.  Which takes us back to our pal, Sloane.  She’ll be sitting in on private meetings with editors from the Wall Street Journal and News Corp execs; attending the Young Global Leaders conference; and documenting it all through written and video blogs on MySpace and the Wall Street Journal online.

Hers will be a point of view unlike any other coming out of DavosYou put her smack in the middle of the action.  Enjoy the view!

Here’s Sloane telling her story of the moment she decided to change her life…

A Day Without A Bag…

anav_htblogo_108x69

Hey, you! Step away from the plastic bag!! Thursday, December 17th is Heal the Bay’s third annual Day Without a Bag – the day when shoppers in the southern California area are asked to use only reusable bags to carry home their holiday treats and treasures.  Our pals at the Surfrider Foundation (and one of October’s Name Your Cause winners) are joining with Heal the Bay to help raise awareness regarding the damage plastic bags cause to our environment – on land and sea.

SurfriderLogoFor instance, each year, over one million plastic bags per minute are consumed worldwide.  Californians alone throw away 600 plastic bags every second. And most of the bags we consume are NOT recycled! They end up on our beaches and in oceans and landfills.  Yikes.

What’s that, you say?  You don’t have any reusable bags?  Fear not, for we bring you tidings of great joy. Over 20,000 reusable bags will be given away at more than 50 locations throughout Los Angeles County on the 17th.  Plus, stores like Ralphs, Albertsons, 99 Cent Stores, and Fred Segal are all offering discounts or other “rewards” when you use your reusable bag.

Heal the Bay and Surfrider are two terrific organizations that work tirelessly to restore and protect our oceans and beaches.  A great gift to yourself or to someone on your secret Santa list would be a membership to either group.  Heal the Bay is a southern California-based nonprofit; Surfrider is worldwide.  Both work tirelessly year-round.

WhatGives!? Guy Christopher Smith had a chance to chat with Surfrider’s Vickie McMurchie when we were at BlogWorld in October.  Take a minute to hear more about how you can help.

Christopher Smith Explains WhatGives!?

Hey, have you met WhatGives!? guy Christopher Smith?  Sure you have.  He’s the VP of Consumer Products and the Creative Director at MediaTrust.  Oh, come on now, you know him. @groovemonkey on Twitter?  Yeah, that Christopher Smith.  He joined us in Vegas in October for BlogWorld and interviewed all the cool people who visited the eBay/PayPal Charity Smackdown #superbooth.  It was non-stop and by the end of the two day convention the poor guy had lost his voice.  But it was all for good causes!!  (Check out some of his interviews below.)

Recently, he found himself on the other side of the microphone, talking about WhatGives!? (yay!) and how the website hopes to provide all kinds of info, support, and tools for charities and for the people who want to get involved.

Drop a note in our tip jar and let us know how we can help you do good.  Or tell us your doing good story.  Or brag about someone else who’s doing good.  We want to hear about it and we want to tell people about it, so the good will keep happening again and again!

Heifer International & Haley the Cow

I just read Noland Hoshino’s tale of Carrying a Cow for a Cause on the Heifer Portland website.  He and Bryan Dainty were at BlogWorld as part of our Name Your Cause campaign.  Haley the Cow was a big hit with everyone who visited the eBay/PayPal #Superbooth.  (Full disclosure, I LOVE Heifer International.  Every Christmas I give my friends and family all sorts of furry and feathered creatures.  My mama is really hoping for a goat this year.  Seriously.)

Please take a minute to read Noland’s story and to learn more about Heifer.  And check out WhatGives!? guy Christopher Smith’s interview with Haley (and Bryan) below!

Guy Kawasaki

You can’t spend a week at a conference like [re]think: Hawaii without hearing the name Guy Kawasaki. As a co-founder of RSS aggregator site  Alltop and partner in venture capital investment group Garage Technologies Ventures he’s a force in his home state and across the worldwide web.

We had a chance to chat with him a few weeks ago in Vegas during BlogWorld.  He had some advice for non-profits and a shout out to the cause that touches him most – the human rights organization International Justice Mission.

LA’s BEST

I’m in Honolulu this week attending the [re]think: Hawaii conference (partially sponsored by WhatGives!?), and learning all about startonomics, sustainability, and social media.  The three “esses”!

During one of the great conversations among locals and mainlanders I heard about Furlough Friday which refers to the 17 Fridays that school will be cancelled this academic year.  Huge state buLAsBestLogodget shortfalls have forced the government to send a lot of workers home on Fridays.  But it leaves parents with the huge problem of what to do with the kids on that day off.  We want to talk more about that later in the week, but it reminded me of the tremendous work being done by LA’s BEST for kids in the Los Angeles school system.

LA’s BEST is an incredibly successful after school program.  Their landmark case study demonstrated that at-risk students in LA’s BEST program are 30% less likely to commit juvenile crime than their peers.  There are also tax dollar benefits and overall improved behavior in school.  It’s a program that is rightfully being copied in other communities.

When we were at BlogWorld in October, we had the opportunity to talk with Zainab Ali, Communications Manager for LA’s BEST (@lasbest).  They joined us as winners of the Name Your Cause program, and it was a great day for everyone!

After the Party’s Over…

Okay, so it’s Tuesday afternoon and I’m finally coming down from the buzz of BlogWorld ’09.  It’s not just that I’ve finally had a decent night’s sleep and that all the alcohol has cleared my system.  It’s that I’ve been able to relax a little and let go of the feeling that I need to do EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW.

BW-wordlogo

That’s what happens when you’re surrounded by hundreds of energetic, determined people who are impatient to create and change so many things; refusing to settle for less than real improvements and advancements.  It’s almost as if you can feel the tweets and texts and e-mails whirring past your head as you walk through the exhibit hall.  The air itself seems alive with purpose and possibilities.  At no time was that more evident than during the 24-hour campaign for #beatcancer.  A challenge was issued and within 24 hours over 200,000 people responded, setting a world record in the use of social mediSU2C-logoa and raising over $70,000 for several cancer-related charities.

alexslemonadestandAt the end of the day, it was an old-fashioned convention.  There were buyers and sellers, teachers and students, leaders, upstarts, and assorted interested bystanders.  There were the usual tchotchkes being given away and the traditional panel discussions, keynote addreBrightPinksses and, of course, cocktail parties (tweetups to you purists). But rather than just a few business deals being settled or orders being written up, this was a gathering where things. got. done.  And thanks to the multitude of connections – on line and off – things will continue to get done.

WhatGives!? Smackdown!

WhatGives!? with #beatcancer!?

It’s easy to make fun of all the folks walking around typing with their thumbs, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on in the world. But it is a misperception. People involved in social networks are more involved, more engaged, and more connected to the wider world than you can imagine. (Well, okay, not you, you’re reading this. But more than all those other people can imagine…)

This weekend a few folks decided to try something to harness all that connectivity for social good. A discussion over dinner led to some phone calls, which led to a 24-hour drive to use social media to spread a message and raise some cash for cancer charities. BlogWorld sponsors eBay/PayPal and MillerCoors Brewing Company agreed to donate a penny every time someone tweeted or blogged or posted on Facebook the phrase #beatcancer. A call to the Guinness Book of World Records set up the challenge to create the Most Widespread Social Network Message in 24 Hours. Then www.beatcancereverywhere.com quickly went up.  Game on!

#beatcancer quickly became the top-trending topic on Twitter (try saying that three times). The hashtag flew around the internet and around the world, topping over 200,000 mentions in just 24 hours. In addition, people were donating directly to cancer-related charities including SU2C (Stand Up to Cancer), Alex’s Lemonade, Bright Pink, and Spirit Jump. Not satisfied with mere pennies, eBay/PayPal chose to pay a buck a tweet during a one-hour period.

All the final tallies and stats are below. It was an amazing campaign that happened so quickly it was over before more traditional media could even mention it. No matter. The thumb-typers were the medium, creating a specific network for a specific need thanks to the generosity of eBay/PayPal, Miller Coors Brewing Company, Everywhere, Don Lemon, and BlogWorld. Very powerful stuff.

Cause Media Group and WhatGives!? were proud to be a part of it. But we know with great power comes great responsibility. We’re doing good things. Then we’re telling people about it. And then, trust me, we’ll be doing it again.

#beatcancer by the numbers

Charities Thrive In The Las Vegas Desert

Bringing together ten diverse charities at the BlogWorld & New Media Expo was not only one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve been a part of, but also just downright awesome!  I watched as their passionate staff and volunteers raised money, spread their message, and most importantly, began to form some genuine friendships.

Thanks to our generous friends at eBay and PayPal, we were able to bring these groups to BlogWorld after they won a week-long challenge among a wide variety of charities.  Once there, we held a Charity Smackdown – and boy, oh boy did we have fun!  Spirit Jump, a new grassroots charity, took 1st place, which earned them an additional $2,000 from PayPal. All of the charities truly won in the end by learning how to harness the power of social media.

Want to see what I’m talking about?  Connect with these amazing folks in your own social networks and hometowns.  Follow Surfrider in their quest for protection of our oceans and  beaches, Canine Companions for Independence as they train dogs for adults with disabilities, L.A.’s Best as they strive for quality after-school programs for L.A.’s youth, and Alex’s Lemonade in their unstoppable drive to end childhood cancer.  Keep up with 3for5 Foundation’s movement to bring clean water to the developing countries, Mother’s Fighting for Other’s & Stepwise Foundation’s fight to provide orphanages with a loving and nurturing environment, Best Friends Animal Society’s amazing animal rescue and protection, and last but certainly not least, Heifer Portland’s goal to ending hunger by providing practical and sustainable solutions to poverty.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? Not for long! The fire of determination these people bring to their causes shines brighter than any of the flashing neon of The Strip. I am truly thankful to have been a part of these charities’ stories, and look forward to watching their continued success.

I’m already counting down the days until we can re-unite and share more laughs, stories, and advice on the world of social media for social good.  BFF’s forever!?

Charities & Participants, what was your favorite part? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. :-)

Can We Get an Amen!?

Don Lemon can come across as a bit of an evangelist.  He’s passionate about the power of social media and actively engaged in spreading the gospel.  We had a chance to chat with him in the WhatGives!? booth during BlogWorld and were knocked over by his enthusiasm!

He also puts his money – or at least his paycheck – where his mouth is.  He did a feature story on CNN about the improvised #beatcancer campaign he and some pals came up with a couple of nights before BlogWorld began.  Check out the video below featuring eBay’s Robert Chatwani, BlogWorld founder Rick Calvert, Grammy-winner Jermaine Dupri, Scott Monty from Ford Motor Company, Frank Elisian of Comcast, and Tamara Knechtel from the social media marketing company Everywhere.
