10th Anniversary of Millennium Development Goals

Mashable's Social Good Summit

Ray Chambers, Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Malaria speaks at the Social Good Summit.

We’re in the thick of one of the most exciting weeks of the year in New York City. It’s UN Week, an event that traditionally was closed off to those not directly involved with the UN and either a leader in government, business or an NGO. Thanks in large part to social media and the increased involvement of those in online communities, there are many opportunities this week for everyone to be involved in the innovative and inspiring conversations taking place.

One of the only events open to the public this week was the Social Good Summit (#socialgood), hosted by Mashable, the 92nd Street Y and the UN Foundation (another was TEDxChange). The Summit included over 20 leaders who spoke to a few hundred attendees which included some of the best and the brightest in the social good space. This innovative Summit focused on discussions around real solutions. Each speaker presented their own new idea that addressed one of the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight international development targets set forth by the United Nations. Adopted by world leaders in the year 2000 and set to be achieved by all 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations by the year 2015, the MDGs seek to spur development by improving social and economic conditions in the world’s poorest countries.

I’ll be guest posting here on WhatGives this week live from New York where I attended not only the Social Good Summit and part of the Digital Days program at 92Y, but also the Clinton Global Initiative (#cgi2010) and other events focused on world changing ideas and the people working towards those goals. I’ll write specifically on the MDGs and conversations around them, so before we begin, let’s outline the eight Millennium Development Goals:

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality.
Goal 5: Improve maternal health.
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development.

Progress on these goals has been mixed, both in effectiveness and also in the countries that have been able to make dents towards achieving these goals. I’m looking forward to sharing the announcements of the coming days and insights into how the international aid community is looking to achieve the goals by 2015. Stop by all week for updated reports live from the Clinton Global Initiative and UN Week events!
