Meredith Hahn is the Director of Community Service and Employee Engagement for American Express. That’s quite a title. But it actually needs all those words because it truly describes what she tries to help American Express do – connect with what the community needs and develop ways for AmEx employees to become more involved in charities and causes that they (the employees) care about.
American Express led the way with what is now routinely called a “cause campaign” with their 1983 penny per purchase promotion that raised $1.7 million for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty – and significantly increased card usage. They obviously paid attention to that powerful response and have continued to create campaigns that encourage and support cardholder giving (Charge Against Hunger; Members Project), and also nurture employee giving and volunteer programs internally (Give2Gether; Serve2Gether).
We had the pleasure of speaking with Meredith this summer during the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in New York. She talks about the programs AmEx has built and how 88% of their employees say those programs make AmEx a great place to work.
Last Wednesday, AmEx launched a new iteration of their Members Project – a “Glee” themed campaign that encourages people to “take action and make a difference.” Melissa Jun Rowley will have more on that later today.
