YouTube focus on Homelessness

Quick question: What do you think about when you see the word “Homeless”?  Keep it in mind.  I’ll ask again in a minute.

Most of us are in the dark about the state of homelessness in the US.  Today, the lights come on, thanks to YouTube and a pretty remarkable guy.

Our buddy, Mark Horvath is in the middle of a tour of 28 US cities, chronicling the condition and stories of homeless people as he goes.  His blog Invisiblepeople.tv chronicles what most of us might find hard to watch, let alone believe.   I’ve said before, it’s powerful stuff.  Some of it can be hard to watch, like a recent interview with an outreach worker about human trafficking in America.

Yeah, you read that right.  Here, in the US.

Didn’t know about it?  You’re not alone.

So what do you think about when you see the word “Homeless”?  Be honest.  Take a moment.

Bet you didn’t think about someone like Jean, a mother of five, living with her kids in a hotel room in Missouri.  Or Candace and her four children.  But they are the face of Homelessness in our country, and Mark works every day to bring their stories to you and me.

I often wonder how he does it.  Sometimes 7 or 8 interviews a day, a whole day of wading deep into the most heartbreaking stories.

Every day.

If Mark can do it every day, don’t you think we should stop to watch and listen for one day?

YouTube does, apparently.  Starting today, they’ll be covering the issue of Homelessness on their home page.

Swallow hard, take a deep breath, and go look.  Don’t stay in the dark on this one.
