A Small Contribution In A Small Town Makes Big Difference

I was traveling last weekend, this time by car across Colorado, and my family and I decided to stop for breakfast in a little town called Palisade.  The cafe was on a quaint little main street of town and  it looked promising because it had the most cars out front.  I ordered the Stuffed French Toast, which I highly recommend, and the the strongest coffee they had.  Both were perfect for getting the day started for the five hour road trip ahead with my kids.  Our bill was reasonable and my wife handed me something I hadn’t really paid much attention to that was on the table and asked, “Should we keep the receipt?”  She is always watching out for ways to decrease our tax bill.  This is what was handed to me.

For those that have a difficult time reading the poorly shot BlackBerry picture, the placard reads:

This establishment proudly participates in the voluntary 1% for Conservation Program created to raise funds for conservation of orchards and vineyards, working farms, scenic open lands, and wildlife habitat in and around Palisade.  A 1% donation has been added to the subtotal of your bill.

This is a campaign put on by the Mesa Land Trust.  I looked online and it appears to be a well-seasoned organization.  I was a customer of the Palisade Cafe & Grill, and there are two other organizations in town that provide the 1% donation:  Talbott Farms, and Rapid Creek Cycles.  This is an ingenious way to raise money for the nonprofit in a small town where every penny counts.  I walked out of the cafe with a warm fuzzy feeling of helping a small town with their initiative and a great sugar high and coffee buzz.  This was clearly a win-win situation.  It does go to show that a small effort in a small town can make a big difference.
