Contest: What Does a “World of Good” mean to you?

[Disclosure: We unabashedly love what World of Good is doing, and occasionally our sister company StudioGood runs campaigns for them. But not this one. So that's OK.]

C’mon, admit it. You like buying things. But you also feel a little bit guilty sometimes about the resources that go into creating the brand new thing, and sometimes you wonder how the money you’re spending gets carved up by the retailer, distributor, manufacturer, etc. And sometimes you think there must be a way to buy pretty things and live a sustainable lifestyle at the same time.  Do thoughts like this keep you up at night?

Don’t be worried. You’re not alone.  You’re just one of millions in a category called “Conscious Consumer“, and your market is growing.  eBay, already a leader in the sale of sustainable goods (think about it, their platform enables millions to purchase gently used goods), is answering the call of conscious consumers with World of Good, a retail property focused on identifying and distributing products that have a positive environmental or social impact.

Each of the thousands of products they offer is tagged with a “Goodprint” that lets you shop according to your conscious consumer profile: “People Positive” products support local economies or female entrepreneurs in developing countries, while “Eco Positive” products contain a high degree of reused or recycled material. (and yes, of course a product can have multiple Goodprint badges).  And of course, the vendors and products are vetted by category experts so that you know you’re getting the social good you pay for when you make your purchase.

One such vendor, Stay Vocal, is partnering with World of Good this month in a contest which aims to tap the creative spirit of the community, and to create some cool T-Shirt designs in the process. I’ll get to the contest in a minute. Here’s why you want to support what Stay Vocal and WoG are doing (from the Stay Vocal site):

STAY VOCAL is a Green America certified ReUse apparel company. We rescue t-shirts and give them a second life.

About half of our apparel line is made from brand new t-shirts that were going to be destroyed. The other half of our apparel is found at thrift stores and through donations, allowing us to offer more unique items to our customers.

Great idea, right? Here’s what’s better: the Stay Vocal team has committed to running 300 special edition T-Shirts based on a winning design in this month’s contest.  All you have to do is create a design that illustrates what a “World of Good” means to you.  Full rules are here, but the winning design gets $200 cash, a World of Good shopping spree, and hey! – gets to say “I designed this cool T-shirt I’m wearing.”

So go if you’re artistically inclined, go on over to World of Good and make something beautiful that matches their vision of sustainable consumption.  Or, y’know, just go over and shop. Lots of pretty things on sale, with less guilt.
