As we mentioned in an earlier post, Alex Scott was a very special little girl. She set up a lemonade stand when she was only four years old to raise money to help find a cure for all childhood cancers, including her own. Before she passed away she had raised tens of thousands of dollars. Since then, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised millions “one cup at a time.”
2010 marks the tenth anniversary of that first lemonade stand. All across the country and in Canada people set up over 2,000 stands in honor of Lemonade Days June 11th, 12th, and 13th. Los Angeles was no exception as Madame Tussaud’s built the very first lemonade stand ever on Hollywood Boulevard and stocked it with ice cold lemonade that was handed out (for a suggested donation) by a team of show biz pros including BD Freeman (VH1), Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”), Bailee Madison (“Brothers”), Vincent Ward (“True Blood”), and model, actress, and best-selling author Cindy Crawford!
Folks at ALSF are still counting up the money as it comes in from kids, grandparents, schools, community groups, companies, and individuals, but they expect to have raised over $1 million dollars in just those three days. Money that will go to fund cutting edge cancer research; to provide lodging and travel funds for families whose children are battling cancer; and fund nursing research and grants, designed to improve the quality of life and care for those children.
Of course, just because Lemonade Days are over, that doesn’t mean you can’t set up your own stand whenever you want! It’s a fun way to show even very small children that they can help others – other kids just like them – and that just a few dollars can make a big difference. As summer heats up, however, the biggest lesson may be one of the oldest… be careful not to drink up all the profits!
