Today is a great today to celebrate being alive and barefoot. That’s right. It’s National Barefoot Day (and you thought I just like liked making up holidays). Thanks to the Nashville-based charity Soles4Souls, which collects shoes and distributes them free of charge to people in need in over 125 countries, celebrities are digging into their pockets and closets to support the cause.
Hollywood starlet Scarlett Johansson has donated 2,000 pairs of new shoes over the years to participate in the anti-poverty initiative. Brittany Snow, Nick Lachay, NBA All-Star Antawn Jamison, Randy Jackson, and Kellie Pickler are also on the star-studded list of shoe donors.
Barefoot day is the official launch pad for Barefoot Week, which is a seven-day series of events promoting shoe drives, festivals, and retail trade-ins. Throughout the week, Soles4Souls will be giving away more than 50,000 shoes in the United States.
On Wednesday, June 2, Soles4Souls Founder & CEO Wayne Elsey and his staff will go barefoot for four consecutive hours, as part of the movement. They’re challenging members of the press to do the same. (If I didn’t work from home all day, I’d jump into the game feet first:) .
To learn about how you can get involved in Barefoot week, check out the Soles4Souls website. If going barefoot IRL isn’t up your alley, you can go barefoot online.
