Celebrate Women in Recovery with The GRAMMYS’ MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert

Addiction is a deep-rooted problem here in the US.  People struggling with addiction have to deal with the fear of losing jobs and children, the shame of going to jail, and other tragedies that come with admitting substance addiction.  The end result is alarming, especially when it comes to women.  Recent data reveals that only 8% of women with addiction problems seek help, and the number of women abusing alcohol (indicated by related traffic arrests) has increased 28% over the past decade.

The music industry seems especially prone; so many talented and extraordinary musicians have lost their lives to the disease of addiction.  Fortunately, there are organizations like MusiCares, one of two charities that the GRAMMYs supports.  MusiCares provides addiction recovery treatment to members of the music community, regardless of their financial circumstances, and is devoting their annual star-studded Musicares MAP Fund Benefit Concert to celebrating women in recovery; saluting former first lady Betty Ford and the Betty ford Center.  Debbie Carroll, Executive Director of MusiCares, explains their decision, saying:

“This year, our focus on women was prompted by an awareness that women encounter many challenges that can be barriers to receiving necessary treatment for substance abuse issues.  Our MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert will celebrate women currently in recovery and serve to launch our campaign aimed to provide national attention on the challenges, obstacles, and solutions for women struggling with addiction issues.”

Talk about ambition!  MusiCares is an amazing organization. They really know how to rally their A-List supporters for a good cause and even more important, how to give hope to such a dark disease.  There are so many famous singers, DJs, and songwriters performing and attending I can’t even fit them in this space!  For a full list of who will be there, be sure to check out the MusiCares site here.

Oh, and guess who will be there?  Yours truly.  Yup, that’s right!  If you want to join me and support this amazing cause, click here to buy tickets.  The event takes place on May 7th at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles so buy your tickets now and spread the good word!
