NTEN: Virtual Attendance = more NPOs can benefit

OK, I admit it. I should probably be in Atlanta right now.

It’s time for the annual NTEN (The Nonprofit Technology Conference), and a lot of my friends are gathering to share the lessons they’ve learned in working with today’s technologies.

NTEN is always a terrific opportunity for nonprofits to discover ways to expand their reach and effectiveness through new methods and technologies.  It’s also a great networking event that allows people who often only know each other by their Twitter icons or Facebook status to meet in person.  We all can get caught up in our own little bubble sometimes and it’s helpful to occasionally get out there and see the bigger picture in person. During SXSW that really hit home for me – it’s great to get in the mix and learn from others firsthand.

But the folks running NTEN may have made it the perfect example of a great conference you can attend by staying home.  This year they’re offering multiple ways to participate if you can’t make it to Atlanta for the weekend.

For instance, on Friday there are three remote locations where you can register to participate virtually: Brooklyn, Austin, and Washington, DC.  In addition, today and Saturday there are numerous sessions you can access via your laptop.  While in your jammies.  Starting to sound pretty good, isn’t it?

Then there are all the Twitter comment streams and blog posts and information sources that will provide additional insight into all things NTEN.  So, if you can’t go, follow the hashtags, watch what Beth Kanter, Mark Horvath, and others are doing.  You’ll be glad you did.
