Need to convince your boss, board members, or co-workers that your charity needs to be raising funds online and with social media?  Let’s take a look at some facts about social media, online fundraising, and how today’s modern donor expects charities to behave online.

Online Fundraising

  • Online giving (in the US) has reached about $2.62 billion. [1]
  • The average online donation is $57. [2]
  • While online giving totals about 10 percent of overall giving, the rate is growing very fast – about 50% per year. [4]
  • The majority of online donors have little to no prior giving history with an organization. [1]

Charities & Social Media

  • 75% of US online adults now participate in some form of social media activity [3] and over 60% of all donors (online and off) research your cause before giving their donations.  And donors aren’t just researching your website, they’re looking at your blog, Facebook, Twitter, and any other platform
  • 36% of donations in the US are received on websites and social networking sites [2]
  • 39% people get up-to-date information on charities on websites, Facebook, and Twitter. [2]
  • A recent study found that 74% of nonprofits have a presence on Facebook – with an average community size of 5,391 – and 80% are committing at least one quarter of an employee’s time to social media. [4]

So folks, as you can see, this is the age for digital activism and the wired fundraiser. Today, fundraising is all about showing donors that they have truly made a difference.  Online tools like the WhatGives!? PayPal Donation Widget make it extremely helpful in making that individual connection and showing the impact of all your work.

  1. Thank you Kerrie for your inspiration and patience guiding me, and all of us dedicated to saving those on two legs and four, so that we can guide others to donate to K-9 Armor. You are a true guardian angel and thank you for helping us protect those who lay down their lives to protect us. Many police dogs will receive bulletproof vests thanks to the Widget, wishing you and all angels on active duty much success!

    Hi Kerrie -
Thanks for a great article! Loved the facts and data at the end. I went looking for some of the stats you listed to share with a client and found a few issues I thought you might want to know about.

    1) The very first bullet point – online giving is much higher than that according to a report by Ted Hart (2008) which puts it over $14 billion. See this link: http://ow.ly/1BNR7

    2) The NetworkforGood report isn’t on the page you’ve linked to and I couldn’t find it anywhere on the site (but I did find some similar data in an NTEN report – http://ow.ly/1BLcZ).

In my search I found lots of other great information so all is not lost! :) Thanks again.
