Finding Blogs You Want To Read

I have been discussing how people find your non-profit or cause online using Google or other search engines, but how can you find a shortcut to finding blogs and websites you want to read?  There are a few places to start that provide some further reading and lead to more blogs that might also be of interest to you.

The obvious place to start is on Google.  You can go to Google blog search and find specific articles written by bloggers in your genre.  If you want to find blogs that talk about fresh drinking water for third world countries, you can start by searching for blogs talking about that issue.  Bookmark the ones you find that are of interest.  Reading them regularly can prove to be a great source of information.  (I’ll talk about bookmarking and setting up an RSS reader in another post.)

Another place to find blogs or sites that update regularly in your area is Technorati.  In the example that I searched, Cancer Blogs, there were a large number of results.  The results page provides a look at blogs by “authority”, ranking them by their influence.  Their influence is determined by the number of blogs linking to them and traffic and other areas.  Those blogs with the most influence are blogs that might interest you when you want them to discuss your cause – a good reason to find those in your genre.

I have recently been searching Alltop.  Alltop provides you with a list of the top blogs in genres that might be of interest in your area.  For instance, if you want to find blogs that are environmental or “green” blogs, they do the research for you and list the blogs in that genre, and also provide you with the titles of the most recent blog posts.  This site allows you to follow along without having to set up a RSS feed reader or doing any special set up on your part.  Merely bookmark the appropriate Alltop page or make note of where it is and you can visit each day to see what new posts are written.

If you have a blog in a specific genre or niche, you can strive to be the top in your field and perhaps get listed in these areas on these sites.  Google results are based on how relevant your website is to someone’s search and how new your post is.  Technorati and Alltop are more specific to thought leaders and influencers.  Once you find blogs you like, look to see who those bloggers are reading and linking to.  This will help you find more people in your community and some new friends to share information with.  It’s all about expanding your knowledge and your reach!
