Millions Post Bra Color to Raise Awareness…

Thank you to everyone for your support these past few days as we’ve worked to gather and share information in support of Haiti earthquake relief.  Haiti will need our support for years to come, and WhatGives!? will continue to keep you up-to-date on all the ways you can help for as long as needed.  We’re truly honored to have been a hub of information for so many this week, and we understand that everyone is a little emotional and worn out from the 24-hour news cycles.  So, WhatGives!? readers and friends – you deserve a good distraction and perhaps a little fun as well!

That being said, let’s talk Ta-Tas! Yes, I said it.  Ta-Tas.  Last week, you probably saw several people posting Facebook status updates like “beige”, “hot pink”, “crimson red”, “sexy black and gold” or even “nude”.  Now, I know what your first thoughts were – it’s Girls Gone Wild on my Facebook stream, AWESOME DUDE!  Now, I hate to burst your bubble, ladies and gentleman but as it turns out, this was a total grassroots effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.  No one really knows the source and no one is taking credit, even after millions of women joined in and the message permeated through Facebook land.  Viral at it’s best!

There’s been a lot of heated speculation and blog posts on this “campaign” – from angry men wanting to post their underwear color (ew!), to breast cancer community members who are frustrated by the lack of information (understandable), to others who were completely dumbfounded by the concept.

Whether or not you agree with how effective this approach was, you cannot deny that seeing girls post their bra colors didn’t get you all hot and bothered.

I say, who CARES!?  Didn’t it get you talking about breast cancer?  Didn’t it set off a flurry of bloggers and comments and even more status updates on the subject?  Didn’t it make you think of more ways that we can use tools like Facebook to spread awareness?  Admit it, people!  It totally worked, and you loved every second of it.

Internet memes are a dime a dozen these days.  But simple, good messages like this don’t just go viral often.  “We think it’s terrific,” said Andrea Rader, a spokesperson for Susan G. Komen For the Cure, an organization that raises funds for breast cancer research. “It’s a terrific example of how little things get started on the Internet and go a long way to raise cancer awareness.”

I couldn’t agree with Andrea more.  Small gestures of support totally matter, and are a light-hearted way of bringing together social media for social good.

Do you agree?  How do you think this should’ve gone down differently? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
