Halo Cares – And You Should Too!

Too far? Nah!

Too far? Questionable. Too cute? Definitely!

You know we’ve been nudging you to give to local food banks a lot this year because more people than ever are counting their nickels.  Well, we don’t want to forget our favorite little furry creatures either!  Animal shelters are in a tight spot too, with budget cuts and decline in donations.  But wait! There is good news. You can donate kibble to shelters across the country with the click of a mouse thanks to a very smart 12-year old.

Mimi Ausland of Bend, Oregon started a site called FreeKibble.com and FreeKibbleKat.com to help abandoned animals.  The concept of FreeKibble.com is similar to FreeRice.com; you play, food is donated!  In this case, you answer a trivia question, and no matter if you’re right or wrong, 10 pieces of kibble are donated to shelters across to the United States. As of today, 201,636,280 pieces of kibble have been donated since the site began on April 1, 2008.  That’s a lot of kibble y’all!

FreeKibbleKat.com & FreeKibble.com

One of the big supporters of FreeKibble is Halo, Purely for Pets, an all-natural pet food company.  Halo is another great story of a pet lover who used her passion for pets for the good of others.  Company founder Andi Brown was worried about her cat Spot’s deteriorating health so she began cooking healthy and natural homemade stew.  Long story short?  She was so enamored of the whole experience that she kept on cooking and in 1986, Halo, Purely for Pets was born!   David Yaskulka, VP Marketing Communications for Halo Pets, told me that Halo’s wholesome approach has extended to their views of giving back, which he describes as a “natural extension of their social mission”.

Which leads us to Ellen DeGeneres.  Yes, you heard me right.  Hang on and I’ll explain.  As you probably know, Ellen is an outspoken pet lover and in 2008, became a co-owner of Halo.  She’s used her celebrity status to further the good works Halo has become so well known for – sponsoring contests, donations, and most importantly, providing a place for passionate animal activists to talk about their charitable work.  Which brings us full circle back to FreeKibble.  Check out this clip of Mimi Ausland’s appearance on Ellen’s show to talk about FreeKibble.com — talk about a dynamic duo!

Don't be lazy. Take action on behalf of your favorite kitties & doggies!

Don't be lazy. Take action on behalf of cats and dogs all over the world!

David attributes the site’s success to the fact that it’s “a simple and enjoyable consumer action that results in a donation without anyone having to open their wallet”.  It’s fun, easy, and I’ll be honest, a bit addicting! :-)   Want to join moi?  Download the app on your iPhone, bookmark the site, and spread the word while you’re at it!  Want to help via Twitter?  No problem!  Just follow @freekibble and @halopets on Twitter – Halo donates a meal to homeless dogs & cats for each new follower!  It’s so easy, but it really does a lot.
