Toys for Tots

Well, I feel as if I really don’t need to say anything else.  I mean, come on, people, it’s Toys for Tots, for the love of Pete!  Since 1947, the US Marine Corps has been collecting new, unwrapped toys for children all across the country.  We all grew up seeing those donation boxes in local stores, often “guarded” by a larger-than-life Marine decked out in his dress blues.  I remember high school football games that required a toy as the admittance fee.  By halftime the gravel parking lot was lined with pickup trucks piled with toys, all looking like redneck sleighs.  (Giddy up, Rudolph!)

It’s such a good way to help kids understand the importance of sharing.  When an eight-year-old hands over a toy she’d probably like to keep she also can imagine how happy another little girl will be on Christmas morning.  That momentary twinge of pain is instantly overwhelmed by the pleasure of giving.  It’s a feeling that can’t be explained; it can only be experienced.  The good news is you still get that feeling when you’re older.  Like right now.

So, here we go.  It’s WhatGives!? GivesWhat!? Campaign.  We’re going to load you up with great giving ideas for this holiday season. Start by checking out where the Toys for Tots drop off locations are in your area.  (Or there are lots of other ways to donate in support of this great tradition.)  Then stay tuned throughout December as we steer you towards all kinds of great opportunities, organizations, and causes that can give you that warm-all-over feeling.

Ho ho ho!
