Typing “Thanksgiving” + “lined up” + “food” into Google Sunday afternoon brought up waaaaaay too many articles about organizations overwhelmed by folks needing help this week. California, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Idaho, and on and on. Tales of hardship and embarrassment – so many have never had to ask for help before. Stories of inspiration and surprise – so many of the givers haven’t that much to spare, but they know what it’s like to be in a tight spot. Inevitably, it isn’t some million-dollar donor riding to the rescue. It’s a neighbor scrounging $15 out of a tight household budget to give to someone who has even less. It’s a co-worker spending hours in a cold warehouse filling and decorating food baskets so they seem more like gifts than handouts. It’s that basic impulse to share your fire and food with others, especially when times are tough.
One challenge of writing for WhatGives!? is knowing that we’re kind of preaching to the choir. A website that supports and promotes causes naturally attracts folks who are already working for a cause. We don’t need to tell you that a few bucks and a few volunteer hours can make all the difference to local charities. The challenge is spreading the word to those who may not yet have experienced the pleasure of getting involved in something they believe in.
Drop us a note in the tip jar. Let us know your thoughts on how WhatGives!? can help you reach more of the good people in your community.
Meanwhile, just in case, here’s that food bank locator one mo’ time…
