Food, Glorious Food…

Well, the Christmas decorations are up at the mall, so that must mean it’s almost Thanksgiving.  The 2009 holiday season has arrived.  (Let the Mannheim Steamroller medleys begin.)

As we begin the slow fade to 2010, let’s take the time to reassess what we have and what we have to share.  Our focus for the next few weeks?  Food.  It’s basic and it’s kind of boring, but it’s essential – both for human survival and the survival of our humanity.  If it is impossible for you to imagine what it’s like to truly be hungry, then you are a lucky, blessed individual.  If you’ve been through bad times you understand the desperation hunger brings with it.

So, by golly, let’s DO something.  Every single food bank in this country needs food and volunteers. Call them.  Local schools, organizations, and faith-based groups are having food drives. Help them.  People are hungry every day of the year around the world. Reach out to them.  Don’t let them think they’ve been forgotten.

Need some specific suggestions?  Howzabout…

Help the folks at Allen Community Outreach in Texas gather and distribute food for Thanksgiving.

Eldred Elementary School in Kunkeltown, PA is having their annual food drive through November 23rd.  Drop off a can or two.  Or 26.

The Missoula Food Bank is joining with the local faith-based community to gather food for those who could use a little help.

And don’t forget that some folks literally don’t have a pot to, um, well, cook in.  Donate household items and cooking utensils to be distributed by the Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center in California.

WhatGives!? will be adding to this list all month.  Drop a note in the tip jar and let us know about food drives in your area.  Let’s get to it, people!
