Take the First Step…

Well, even though [re]think: Hawaii has ended (pause for deep sigh), I can’t stop thinking about the fact that so many of the online success stories I heard throughout the week started with, “I didn’t really know what I was doing, but…”  Jill Buck just wanted to teach her children about environmentalism and ended up with a global initiativeTed Rheingold wanted his wife to be able to enjoy photos of dogs until they could get one of their own.  Beth Blecherman needed to find a way to connect with other Moms when she chose to stay at home with her kids.  Over and over these folks jumped right in, never thinking that it might be too hard, or they didn’t understand the technology, or that their idea didn’t have value.  They had an idea and they simply began.

I think that’s an attribute that is found in most successful people – a confidence that they are somehow “worthy” of creating something.  Kevin Pollak is a comedian who, after a few small (usually humorous) film roles, startled people with his dramatic performance in “A Few Good Men”.  Now he’s taken on yet another unexpected role – online talk show host.  Why?  Because it was something he’d wanted to do for a while, so he just jumped in and assumed he’d figure it out as he went along.

Good advice for anyone with a dream…

  1. Thanks for including my story about reaching out to social media and the mom blog community to build a new network and beat the feeling of isolation I was feeling as a mom (after leaving my work network). Social media is such a powerful force, and best of all I am excited about sites like What Gives/Cause Media that uses the power of social media to help charity and other important causes.

Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom/dad or living in an isolated community or just feeling like you need to connect with people with similar interests, your peeps are on the internet if you take a moment to seek them out. Negative Nellies talk about how we sit in front of our computers, anti-social and disconnected. Not true! Beth proved that a site/group like techmamas can enrich the lives of everyone involved. Find a group, join a group, start a group. Do it!
