2 friends, 4 weeks, 16 hours a day – $18K to fight malaria

Don’t let a big idea scare you.  Pretty simple motto, right? It’s the kind of advice battle-worn activists and entrepreneurs (and the Trump University crowd) scoop out in big dollops to the young, fresh faces that seek them out.  But one of the coolest things about mixing social media with social good is that the tools available make it easier than ever for 1 (or 2) people to make a big difference – provided, of course, they bring the passion and commitment to pursue the idea.

Sloane Berrent and Doug Campbell have proved it.  Their Cause It’s My Birthday campaign started simply: two friends wanting to enter their 30′s and do some good in the world at the same time. Here’s where the passion comes in:  Sloane and Doug reached out to their freinds to make it happen.  They did their research to find the right non-profit, Netting Nations, right down to looking at the nets they’d be buying with what they raised.  They organized (mostly online) freinds and acquantences in cities across the US.  They bought their own plane tickets. They purchased party dresses (OK, that was just Sloane, as far as I know).

Simple concept, two friends, hard work, commitment, and a network of supportive folks: The resulting big idea: A one-week, SEVEN city party that to date has raised over $18,752 to fight malaria in Ghana. So far, that’s more than 450 people chipping in to say “Happy Birthday” in a way that saves lives.

The campaign runs until October 31st, so you’ve still got time to help them meet their $20,000 goal.  Go say happy birthday. www.causeitsmybirthday.com
