I’m a Bookie…

There was an article about Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger in Parade Magazine in which he talked about how he recently got all his personal belongings back from that ill-fated flight into the Hudson.  Apparently, everything from a crash site is carefully gathered, cleaned and restored as much as possible, then returned to survivors or their next of kin.  He mentioned that his library books were ruined, but that he returned them to the library anyway where they are now on display.

He’s kidding right?  He’s a hotshot pilot.  Doesn’t he have a Kindle or a Sony Reader or at least buy over-priced books in the airport gift shop?  Who goes to the library anymore? Nationwide statistics on public library usage seem hard to come by, but local reports and word of mouth indicate that library usage is up – and not just for computer use.  People  – men, women, and especially children – check out actual books from bricks and mortar libraries.

And they’re broke.  Most libraries are struggling to make ends meet.  Crazy.  Business is booming and they’re going bust.  But good people are stepping up to help.  People like John Lithgow.  November 19th in Vancouver, WA, the award-winning actor and best-selling author of children’s books (surprise!) will be the featured guest of its 2009 Authors & Illustrators Dinner and Silent Auction. Money raised will help support libraries throughout southern Washington state.
